She was born in Boston, educated at Harvard and St Martin’s College of Art in London, lived and worked in NYC for ten years and moved to England permanently in 1989. Her first novel, How I Live Now, was published in 2004. Since then, she has won or been shortlisted for 21 international book prizes and become a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She was awarded the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2016. Her most recent novel is Jonathan Unleashed for adults and Good Dog McTavish, her middle-grade debut.
